幹細胞は、多能性を持っており、様々な分野で応用されています。
幹細胞の複製において最もよく知られているのは、世界初の体細胞クローンで生まれた哺乳類であるドリーDollyです。
1996年に英国エジンバラのにズリーン研究所で複製された。
卵子から核を除去し、成熟した量の乳腺細胞核を移植する方法で誕生され、6年6ヶ月後の廃船種にかかって安楽死されました。

胚由来幹細胞(Embryonic stem cells(ESCs)は、体の中のすべての細胞に分化することができるマスター細胞です。しかし、胚性幹細胞は、細胞を得る方法から分化（培養）をさせた後、治療に使用する場合、腫瘍発生などの懸念といろいろな議論があり、法的な規制が強化されています。動物実験は、着実に進行がされているが、人間に直接適用して、臨床進行される事例が多くありません。現在臨床2段階以上進行された適用疾患は米国ACT社のhESCからRPE（retinal pigment epithelial）細胞を作って網膜に関連する細胞が萎縮するなどの異常で視力が低下した黄斑変性（dry age-related macular degeneration= dry AMD ）疾患の臨床が行われています。現在の臨床最終結果発表前や（2015.04）希望的な結果を示していると途中発表されています。

※ Dry AMD(dry age-related macular degeneration) : Dry AMD is most common type of macular degeneration and affects 90% of the people who have the condition. In the dry form, there is a breakdown or thinning of the layer of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) in the macula. These RPE cells support the light sensitive photoreceptor cells that are so critical to vision. When we look at something, the photoreceptors (rods and cones) gather the images and send them to the brain, where vision takes place. (reference date : April, 2015)
